Another Year

I've got a shoebox full of bills I haven't paid
I've got a dog that's gone astray
I've got one mouth that is full of broken promises
and I swear I'll fix them all someday

Before I realized it
another year had gone by
before I thought about it
another year had come and gone
I've got a calendar of appointments that I've missed
I've got pills to get me through the night
I've got a notebook full of songs I never sing
and I swear one day I'll make it right
chorus

Ain't it funny how the time goes by
as you cross that bridge of years
ain't it funny how it don't do a thing
to dim your diamond tears
ain't it funny how when things are good
how fast it seems to flow
ain't it funny how it almost stops
when you hear that north wind blow

chorus

I've got a legacy of the things I've left unsaid
I've got a heart that's full of fear
and I could change my life if I only had the time
all I need right now is one more year

Can't Hide from the Rain

After thirty-nine days and thirty-nine nights
Most of our city had been washed away
What does the world think when it's watching the news?
Does it think it is safe? So did we yesterday.

There's no power at all and our cash is no good
Our bread is silver and bullets are gold
From the smoke and the ruin now comes a cruel voice
"I am in charge now, so do what you're told."

It don't count if you're poor
Or blessed with earthly gain
There's only one truth for us all
We can't hide from the rain
In the refugee camps there's more rumor than news
We don't know how far or how wide this has spread
Is the place where we're going worse than it is here
Word from back home says they're eating their dead
If you're black or your white
In the end we all bleed the same
There's only one truth for us all
We can't hide from the rain
We'll go on by foot when the gas has run out
With luck we might rea ch a safe haven by fall
And we'll fall on our faces the day we arrive
And pray for the mountains to cover us all
If you're living in sin
Or even if you're a saint
There's only one truth for us all
We can't hide from the rain

Dirty Old Rabbit

Thirty years ago he was at the top of his game
Harry the Hare had everything
money and girls and fame
spent an awful lot of time
hanging with those three little kids
Harry said they were his nephews
but whispers said they were his

Twenty years ago he lost his Saturday morning crown
video games and action figures
knocked him right flat down
that's when Harry called it quits
and he said that he was through
he went off to find himself
and learn his mantra, too

He's fallen off the wagon
and he's staggering 'round
that dirty old rabbit is back in town
all the little chi ldren
are wearing a frown
'c ause that dirty old rabbit has
let them down
He fell in love ten years ago
with a human girl, I think
she wanted a relationship
but he was just pen and ink
that's when Harry started drinking again
and he started acting strange
living in the back of his car
scratching at his case of mange
chorus
Well it was only yesterday
when I last saw Harry the Hare
fresh out of rehab, all dried out
ready to take a dare
he's waiting for that big comeback
to again be in demand
but he's just counting to ten
with four fingers on each hand
chorus

Drugstore Cowboy

Lyin' alone in my hospital bed
in a small town that they call Des Moines
I'm broke up and busted, nothin' in my pockets
except for some lint and three coins
pull up a chair, nurse, I'll tell you the story
of how all of this came to be
I wanted the fame of a good cowboy name
but i'm just a sad wannabe
Hold my hand while I'm dying
this old drugstore cowboy
so far from my home on the range
I could've been someone
but I never tried
it's so sad that I never changed
Well I never punched cattle but I beat up some hippies
and I've never been on a horse
but I had me a six-pack and a package of Red Man
and a tin can to spit in of course
wh en school let out I'd drive to t he Junior High
pick up my little girlfriend
on the night of my prom I ran foul of her mom
and that was the start of the end
chorus
So I snuck out of town, got a job in the oil patch
lost me a finger or two
in a bar room in Tulsa, got in a fistfight
that's how I lost my first tooth
lost my left hand in a Birmingham punch press
in Dallas I put out my eye
lost my liver to drinkin' and now I been thinkin'
at thirty-three it's time to die
chorus
And during my lifetime I've sure had some good times
from the time of my birth 'till my fall
and during my lifetime I've built up some memories
I just can't remember them all

Going to Texas #4

Blue white headlights
Race down the road
Chasing the darkness into dawn
Your seat belt's undone
Asleep on my arm
This is a mission that we're on

I wonder if they've found us missing yet
Did they find out before the sun had set
I wonder if they found the note we left
Are we in trouble now - wanna bet?
We're going to a place
Where we can make a stand
You'll cook and raise the kids
And I will work the land
So take the wheel and steer
And dream about our plans
While I get down on my knees
And work the pedals with my hands
We've got your suitcase
My duffel bag
A few more hours and we're free
We've got this map to the
edge of the world
Nobody loves you like me

They shouldn't have told us to call it off
They shouldn't have threatened us with the cops
They shouldn't have told us to stay apart
They shouldn't have tried to break our hearts
chorus
State patrolman
Passed us right by
That was an hour or so ago
We've both discussed this
It's what we want
Looks like our cash is getting low

So if you got doubts better tell me now
We've still got time to head back to town
Or no more talking if we should or not
We're gonna keep going unless we get caught
chorus

We're going to a place
Where we can make a stand
You'll cook and raise the kids
And I will work the land
Now I'll take the wheel and steer
And dream about our plans
While you get down on your knees
And work the pedals with your hands

One More Cigarette

Sitting in my car I'm hearing the news
'bout the next round of jobs that we're going to lose
seems we're gonna outsource to the Philippines
ain't nobody here don't know what that means

Outside the snow is starting to fall
don't know if there'll be Christmas after all
can't even jump before I drown
guess that's the curse of a company town

Well they can take my dignity
and they can take my pride
because I know I need this job
in order to survive
but there's one thing I keep inside
that they will never win
I'm having one more cigarette before I go in
Management has said the message is clear
we've got to do this to be here next year
the union's saying everything's fine
but they've sold us all out right down the line
chorus
Sitting in my car I'm hearing the news
wondering how long before I must choose
they must all be blind if they think we don't know
and since this wait is killing me slow
I'm having one more cigarette before I go in

Red Riding Hood

There's a beast with big, dark eyes
that is lying in wait for you
there's a beast with long, sharp teeth
that knows what it wants to do
remember all that your mother said
for she knows these woods by sight
don't stray off of the path you've chosen
or you'll feed its appetite

And if you see a wolf in the forest
and if you sense a strange shape drawing near
and if you feel a hot breath on your neck
then you're close enough that yo u will hear
it say --
He comes with words like honeycomb
everything you want to hear
bearing gifts and promises
so to allay your fear
keep your basket by your side
don't even let him see
for he won't fall to the hunter's snare
if you're feeding him for free

chorus
There's a beast with big, dark eyes
that badly wa nts its way
and it knows that the hour is his
if he just gets you to stay
you won't know that he's even won
that your conscience has grown dim
till you find you're back in the woods
and you're waiting just for him

chorus

Salad Days

There were no parades back then
There were wars but we weren't involved
The money was good but not that great
Most people had a job
I was happy but not too proud
I didn't embarrass myself too much at all
Had the love of a good woman
Had a star where I could hang my dreams
I didn't know back then that it was all I'd need
These are things I should remember
These are things that I should keep inside
But I see them now through a dark haze
And I wish someone had told me
And I wish someone had said
"This is indeed your golden age,
Your spot-lit stage,
Your salad days."

The Santa Claus Song

I was a good boy all year long
I was hardly ever bad
I wanted mom and dad happy
And I didn't want Santa mad
Then I asked for a train and a bicycle
Toys and candy to share
What did I get on Christmas Day?
Socks and underwear...

You can keep your snow white beard
And you can keep your mistletoe
Keep your big fat belly
You can keep your "Ho ho ho"
Keep your milk and cookies
And your eight tiny reindeer
I got screwed by Santa Claus this year
I made my bed most every day
Did my homework every night
I even ignored my sister when
She wanted to pick a fight
What was my reward this year?
A sweater and a cap
A toothbrush in my stocking
And a bunch of other...
junk

chorus

He game me soap and shampoo
And other stuff instead
He might have mixed the orders up
But I'm still seeing red
And now revenge, not sugarplums
Is dancing in my head
And I won't rest 'till Rudolph's stuffed
And hanging 'bove my bed
Oh yeah

chorus

I got screwed by Santa Claus
He even gave me dental floss
I got screwed by Santa Claus this year

BACK

Those Other Guys

I lost my phone number
can I have yours?
a girl like you shouldn't be alone
this place gets dangerous
this time of night
so if you don't mind
I'll just walk you home

And if you tell me to get lost
that's fine with me
I'll never darken your door again
and if you should decide
that I'm not the one for you
I promise I'll just walk away
and I won't stalk you like those other guys
I won't even try to kiss you
if you don't want me to
I won't even try to hold your hand
I think that we are both
looking for something more
than you can get in a one night stand
chorus

I won't send you a subscription to Playboy magazine
I won't have your phone service cut off
I won't cook your pet rabbit on the kitchen stove
I won't write your name on truck stop walls

chorus

Wish I Were

Wish I were someone else
maybe someone with a plan
wish I were tall and handsome
with perfect teeth and a tan
wish I were somehow smarter
so I would know just what to do
wish I were somehow wiser
so maybe I could understand you

Wish I, wish I were
wish I were, wish I were
Wish I were with a woman
who would be happy living with me
wish I were in the navy
so I could leave her for the sea
wish I weren't afraid of love
wish I weren't afraid of risk
wish I were more romantic
so I could seal this with a kiss

chorus

If I had three wishes
I would ask for just one more
If I could see the future
I would never answer the door

chorus
