Alright. I have been a fan of JCF for over 20 years. We talk occasionally on facebook. Do not buy into his self effacing talk. If you like his other stuff, you are going to love this. In fact, having read most of what he writes, this was instantly moved to #2.

Don't read the propaganda, don't pass go, don't collect $200. Buy the book.

Full disclosure: I did some of the editing, and if he sells a million copies, he will buy me a 911. So tell your friends to buy it too.

I think Toastmasters ia probably great for people who want to get experience speaking or who have a fear of public speaking that they need to get over. I never had that problem or need, so I never worried about it, never had anything to do with them. I've heard mixed reviews of TM, but they seemed to be from folks with experience speaking. We all need to start somewhere, and I guess "What I Did Last Summer at the Beach" is as good a place as any for most.

I'm okay as long as that famous Introvert's On Switch keeps working.

Interesting. I am not sure if I agree with that 100% though. I made one speech in 2011. In 2012, I have done 3 all ready, with more scheduled next month.

Am I throwing out the baby with the bathwater overlooking Toastmasters? That is the big negative in the post. I suppose it serves a purpose, but for anyone out there actually doing public speaking, it seems a bit superfluous.

Is public speaking about being out there and gaining confidence talking to people? Hell no. It is about speaking fees and selling books. Just my 2 cents.

As I watch the 1971 video for the first time I wondered where in the world the credenza came from. It was so random. Thanks for your research!

By the way, the "my father can read big words too" quote is from "Hop on Pop" not "Mr. Brown." Way to remember the whole quote though!!

Nothing turns me off more than when a writer kills off a favorite character in the middle of a series. I suppose the opposite is also true, when someone needs to die (Jar Jar from the SW prequels, for example).

I did find it a bit of a stretch when Neal Stephenson started using the same characters a few hundred years apart though.

Actually that was the easy part. If you take it into a bare bones Text Editor like NotePad for PC or Text Wrangler for the Mac, it strips out all the formatting (including HTML) you paste it in.
