"Old Loves Die Hard is a story of love and marriage, trust and paranoia, out of the body experiences and bad Godzilla movies. I wrote it when I was a sophomore in college, and after some difficulties with a college professor who was supposed to give an unbiased opinion, and a hazardous community theater production, it was published. The hero, Tony Madison, is a birthday allergic hack writer who is convinced his wife is about to run off with his best friend. When he wakes up in the middle of a chemically induced out of the body experience, he is convinced that he is dead and arranges circumstantial evidence to convince his wife. But then he really dies and finds out his wife is innocent, and is ghost is left standing helplessly by as police investigate the murder.
"I don't think the play has aged very well. It would need a serious update if I were ever to direct it from community theater. I doubt I ever will. When I look at Old Loves, it seems to be written by a different person."
Q: Why isn't there an excerpt from your play OLD LOVES DIE HARD on your site?
JCF: When Old Loves Die Hard first came out, I had some pens made up with the title (and author!) on them to hand out as goodies. I thought it would be a nice promotional gimmick. I sent some to the publisher
of the play. They sent me back a tersely worded letter informing me that if I did ANYTHING to promote the play, I would have to get their permission first. That struck me as being kind of silly, but hey, they're the publishers. I probably would get permission and put up an excerpt if they had a web site I could link to, but last time I checked, they didn't. I suspect I'm at risk of getting chewed out just for having this page up.
